Favorite Books of 2024

favourite books of 2024

This post is long overdue, so I apologize to you guys. I had every intention of posting this the first week of the year, but life got the better of me. Like they say, better late than never, right? This post includes my favorite books of 2024.

2024 is behind us, with the promise of a better year for 2025. At the beginning of every year we feel that anticipation and hope for what the year that just started will bring. I wish you all the best year yet for 2025. But before we look forward to a new reading year, I will share with you my favorite books of 2024.

In 2024 I had a couple more five-star reads than in 2023, but it still wasn’t easy to place them in order.

I read 83 books in 2024, which is pretty amazing. And out of those 83 books, I barely had 10 five-star reads. I’m a bit more conservative with my ratings because I like many books, but rarely love them.

So, let’s dive into my favorite books of 2024, in no particular order. Except maybe the top three, which I stick by!

The Island Of Missing Trees by Elif Shafak the island of missing trees sept 24

The Island of Missing Trees

I never thought a book that has a tree as its main character would make it on my top ten books of the year, but here we are. This book is beautifully written and so unique, it stole my heart. The author’s lyrical style feels like a warm hug on a cold day. It isn’t the genre I usually gravitate towards, but I’m glad I discovered it. This will definitely not be the last book I’ll be reading by her.

As a side note, you can click on the links under each book if you want a detailed description of the books.

We Are the Brennans by Tracey Lange

We Are The Brennans

This is my second book by the author and she’s become one of my favorite authors in a short space of time. What do you know, family sagas are becoming my go-to genre it seems. After thrillers, of course!

Lange has a way of giving each character life, so it feels as if you’ve known them all your life. Not many authors manage it so well. It seems to me as if it comes easily to her. Which is why her books are so engrossing and I love them so much. As I’m writing this I’m planning to read her latest, What Happened to the McCrays, which was published on January 14th 2025.

The Final Nail by Stefan Ahnhem

The Final Nail

This is the last highly rated book I read in 2024. The last installment in the Fabian Risk series by Stefan Ahnhem was sitting on my shelves for a couple of years. Although I enjoyed this book very much, I’m a bit sad that the author ended the story on a sort of cliffhanger. It feels as if there might be a continuation to the series, but don’t quote me on it. I haven’t heard otherwise, so I think this is it for the series.

Complex and filled with many twists and turns, this is a typical atmospheric Nordic Noir thriller. If you love the genre you’ll love this series, but i recommend you start from the beginning, with Victim Without a Face.

Maame by Jessica George

Maame

A cute yet consequential contemporary fiction book, Maame is about a young Ghanaian British woman who is trying to find her place in the world. She is pulled in both directions by her need to fit in with her native London colleagues, and please her conservative Ghanaian parents.

On the one hand, her parents push their traditions on her and make her feel as if she has no choice but to abide by their customs. On the other hand, she really wants to feel free and choose her own path in life.

I loved to see Maddie navigate those internal struggles, and felt so much compassion for her as I kept reading. It’s an overall feel-good book that can capture different audiences, but particularly Millennials.

Listen for the Lie by Amy Tintera

Listen For The Lie

One of the first books I read in 2024, I loved Listen for the Lie so much! Yes, the storyline and the plot were both very well thought-out and executed, but the style is what got me hooked. I loved the sarcastic writing and the character development. Not to mention the shocking ending, which I did not see coming. If you’re looking for a fast-paced, engaging thriller to curl up on the couch with, this is an easy and entertaining read.

All Adults Here by Emma Straub

All Adults Here

I started 2024 with reading This Time Tomorrow by the author, and I instantly loved her writing style. I also gave it five stars, but I loved All Adults Here even more. The quirky characters and the sense of community the book inspired are still imprinted in my mind today. I felt a connection to all the elements in this book, and it gave me such a warm feeling inside while reading it.

To me, this is the kind of book to pick up if you want something uplifting when you happen to be feeling a bit down. It will improve your mood, at least while you are engrossed in it.

Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus

Lessons in Chemistry

If you read my previous review, you know how much I loved this book; here’s a link to that post.

April 2024 Book Reviews

The tv adaptation is also great to watch, but the book is much better. Garmus gave Elizabeth such a strong feminist voice, one that was ahead of her time. In my review I mentioned that this book is so inspirational, it should be required reading in schools. It is eye-opening, funny, and quirky, yet it has such a powerful message. This is one book that is so worth the hype, pick it up if you haven’t yet.

The Bookish Life of Nina Hill by Abbi Waxman

The Bookish Life of Nina Hill

Another of my older books I’ve had on my shelves, this is another cute and light-hearted read. I love Abbi Waxman’s writing so much, it flows. I also love when authors make me crack up without making too much of an effort. Her sarcasm and sense of humour is easy to capture from the pages. The story is fun, although unbelievable, yet you get so caught up in the character’s lives, it feels as if you’ve known them all your life. Even the most unlikable character becomes endearing by the end of the book, which was a first for me. A very cute book to add to your tbr if you haven’t yet.

The Killing by David Hewson

The Killing

To keep up with my dual nature, this darker thriller is also one of my very favorite reads of 2024. Very detailed and with a last cast of characters, it reads with ease. It is a fast-paced Nordic Noir thriller that I put off way too long, but I knew it would be my favorite. After watching the American tv series adaptation then finding the original Danish one, there was no doubt in my mind this book would make it on my top five of any year I decided to read it. Hence, if you love the genre, this one is a definite option. Don’t let its hefty size intimidate you: it is easier to read than expected.

Blue Sisters by Coco Mellors

blue sisters - September 2024

Blue Sisters

If you haven’t read any of the author’s two novels yet, I don’t know what you’re waiting for. It’s rare that I give five stars to more than one book per author, unless they captured my heart. Coco Mellors is by far my new favorite author, possibly ever! The way she writes and makes her characters come to life is hard to put into words.

While the two books are so different, they do manage to make you feel emotions you forgot you had. In Cleopatra and Frankenstein, the main relationship was an intimate one, between a man and a woman. In Blue Sisters, as you may have guessed, sisterly bonds are at the center of the story.

Lyrical and sensitive, Blue Sisters is my 2024 favorite book. If you haven’t read this one yet, do yourself a favor and grab a copy.

Concluding Words

These are my favorite books of 2024. Have you read any of them? I’m curious to know which were your favorite books of 2024. Drop a comment in the box below, or send me a message on Instagram.

Until next time, keep reading fellow bookworms!
