Just in time for the holiday season, this is my last post in the Rainbow covers series for the year. For December, my rainbow covers series is featuring the color red. It is perfect for Christmas, so let’s see which books from my shelves I picked out for you.
The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood
I read this book after the tv adaptation came out, and I must admit that it’s not for me. I came to the conclusion that I’m not into dystopian fiction. I’ve tried a few books in the genre, but i haven’t read one i enjoyed yet. But for those of you who love this type of literature, this is one of the best recommendations I can come up with.
Off Script by Marci Ian
The former news anchor and The Social host turned politician wrote this book in 2020. It is a candid look at her life behind the camera. She’s been in the spotlight on tv for a number of years, but she’s a woman and a mother who struggles with real life issues when she’s offline. She shares a part of her life in this book that contains short chapters and is an easy read.
Secret Lives of Mothers and Daughters by Anita Kushwaha
Secret Lives of Mothers and Daughters
I’ve mentioned this book a couple of times on this blog already, but I still haven’t managed to read it yet. It has a pretty red color, but the story seems interesting as well. As the title implies, the book centers around the secret lives of mothers and daughters. Mala, Nandini and Veena all have secrets that haunt their lives. This is an intergenerational tale of love and loyalty between mothers and daughters.
Macbeth by Jo Nesbo
Published in 2018, this retake on Shakespeare’s original play is such a step out of the author’s comfort zone. Very different from his popular Harry Hole series, Macbeth is a retelling of the English play featuring the infamous king. He used to kill in order to gain the Scottish crown, egged on by his wife. A tale of power, greed, and betrayal, Nesbo shows us a different side to him through this book.
Washington Black by Esi Edugyan
This highly rated novel is an ode to love and redemption, friendship and betrayal. It provokes the reader to think about what true freedom means to them. From the heat of sugar cane plantations in Barbados to the freezing cold of the Arctic Circle, this novel transports us to a fictional world that is not even close to our daily lives. And the lyrical award-winning writing is like a hug on a cold day.
Paper Towns by John Green
I had to add this young adult book to my red rainbow covers series list. I read a couple of the author’s previous novels and enjoyed them very much. They are geared towards a younger demographic, but they’re fun to read every now and then. Like his other novel Looking for Alaska, a teenage boy falls deeply for a self-centered girl. If you’re looking to escape your daily grind, this book promises to make you reminisce of your younger self.
The Maid by Nina Prose
I bought this book shortly after it came out in 2022, but it’s still sitting on my shelves. The author’s second book The Mystery Guest came out earlier this year, and her third Molly the Maid instalment is scheduled to publish in April 2025. It is categorized as a mystery/thriller, but more of a cozy mystery rather than a dark, twisted thriller. It has mixed ratings, but that will not deter me from reading it. Hopefully it won’t stop you from reading it too!
A Feast For Crows by George R.R. Martin
This is the fourth installment in the Game of Thrones series. It is so full of action, yet it continues to entertain us. If you’ve read the previous three books or at least watched the HBO show, you know that in this book the Lannisters control the Iron Throne. It is filled with fast-paced action and countless characters, as well as the numerous twists and turns, making this fantasy series among the most popular to read and watch.
Me Before You by Jojo Moyes
I couldn’t make a list like this and not include something a little lighter. Me Before You is Moyes’s first novel featuring quirky Louisa Clarke and moody ex-master of the Universe Will Traynor. The unlikely pair has very little in common, but they make your heart melt in this cute romantic story. With back and forth dialogue that makes you cry yet laugh out loud at times, the narration flows and it is such a pleasure to read. The movie is kinda cute too!
The Chestnut Man by Søren Sveistrup
Need I say that this is by far the favorite book on this list? If you’ve been here a while, you know this is one of my all-time favorite Nordic Noir thrillers as well as Netflix series. Dark and twisted as I like my books, this Scandinavian thriller will hook you from the first page. With many twists and a couple of unexpected turns, this is one of the books I recommend most to those of you who like the genre. Written by Soren Sveistrup, the producer of Danish crime series The Killing, this book is a must-read!
Concluding Words
This sums up my Rainbow Covers Series, which ends here with red book covers. I was thinking of continuing next year with black, white, and multicolor covers, but we shall see. I was planning to, but I’m not sure if time permits.
For now, I want to thank you all for supporting my passion project, but I am planning to write a lot less in 2025. I am a lot busier with my full-time job, so this blog will have to take a backseat. I will still post occasionally, but most likely I’ll be more present on Instagram stories.
Until next time, take care, fellow bookworms! You will still find me with a book wherever I go, and I’ll be back here from time to time. It’s a pause, not a permanent goodbye!!
